How to Use Jesmonite: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
Basic Jesmonite Process: Step-by-Step
1️⃣ Measure carefully
If you don't know the ratio you need for your mould, fill it with water while its on the scales and then type in the weight in this link. This will then give you the ratio to make your product. Jesmonite Calculator - Built by Razzo Studio
Follow the manufacturer’s ratio — typically a set weight of powder to liquid. Accuracy is key for a strong finish.
2️⃣ Mix until smooth
Combine powder + liquid and stir until lump-free. Work fairly quickly — Jesmonite begins to set in about 5–10 minutes. The smoother the better the end result.
3️⃣ Add pigments (optional)
If you want colour, mix in a small amount of Jesmonite pigment — a little goes a long way!
You can use powders or different pigments (you just might need to use a lot compared to the jesmonite pigment)
4️⃣ Pour into your mould
Pour steadily to avoid bubbles. Gently tap or jiggle the mould to release trapped air.
5️⃣ Let it set
Most pieces can be demoulded in 30 minutes, depending on size and thickness. The product will feel hot - and thats normal!
6️⃣ Seal for protection
Once fully dry apply a sealant to help protect against stains and water. You can use lots of different ones, or jesmonite sealants. (read guide on how to apply)
Left is without sealant compared to the right with sealant.
